Extreme O Isotopic Anomalies in Presolar Oxides from the Murray Cm2 Chondrite

چکیده
Introduction: O-rich stardust grains found in primitive meteorites provide information about a wide range of astrophysical environments. Based on their O isotopic ratios, these grains can be placed into discrete groups, thought to reflect distinct stellar sources [1], such as low-mass AGB stars and supernovae (SNe). However, measurements of sub-μm presolar oxides have revealed sub-populations with extreme anomalies (e.g., large O and/or O enrichments) pointing to distinct stellar sources [2, 3]. Here we report the discovery of more such exotic presolar oxides. Methods: Grains (of average size 450 nm) from the Murray CG acid residue [4] were automatically analyzed for C, O, MgO, and AlO in multi-detection with the Carnegie NanoSIMS 50L using the system described in [2]. High-resolution SEM images and EDX spectra were obtained in order to confirm the grains’ mineralogy and establish that the grains measured automatically were single grains. In cases where they were not, isotopic ratios were calculated from O ion images. Results: The Figure shows O-isotopic ratios for 49 new presolar oxides; an additional 58 identified grains are multiple grains that still require follow-up analysis. Most grains are spinel and have compositions similar to those of previous presolar oxides. However, of particular interest are: grains with the largest O excesses (5-2 and 6-68-8) and depletions (4-3-3) yet observed in O-rich stardust, and three grains with O enrichments indicative of formation in nova ejecta [2]. The two most O-rich grains lie intriguingly close to two presolar graphite grains thought to have a SN origin [5]. Additional isotopic measurements of the unusual grains should help us to better unravel their origins.

Identification of Presolar Spinel Grains from a Murray Residue by Multi-detection Raster Imaging
Introduction: Grain size separate CG from the Murray CM2 carbonaceous chondrite contains mostly spinel grains of average diameter 0.5 μm [1]. Zinner et al. [2] found that approximately 1% of these spinel grains are of presolar origin as determined by their large O isotopic anomalies. These O isotopic measurements were made with the NanoSIMS on individual grains that were well separated from one...

Introduction: Silicates and oxides are among the most abundant types of presolar dust grains observed in primitive solar system matter [e.g.,1,2]. The CR chondrite clan, consisting of the CR, CH, and CB chondrite groups, contains some of the most primitive meteorites, with characteristic bulk 15 N-enrichments [5,6]. High abundances of presolar silicates and carbonaceous grains were recently rep...

A 28 g sample of the Qingzhen enstatite (EH3) chondrite was subjected to chemical and physical separation procedures to yield several grain-size residues. Ion mapping of isotopes of Si, O, and C in the ion microprobe of two size fractions (QZR4: 0.4–0.8 lm; QZR5: 0.8–2 lm) identified 55 30Si-depleted candidates out of 37,917 Si-rich grains and six 18O-depleted grains out of 54,410 oxides. Subse...
متن کاملPresolar spinel grains from the Murray and Murchison carbonaceous chondrites
With a new type of ion microprobe, the NanoSIMS, we determined the oxygen isotopic compositions of small ( 1 m) oxide grains in chemical separates from two CM2 carbonaceous meteorites, Murray and Murchison. Among 628 grains from Murray separate CF (mean diameter 0.15 m) we discovered 15 presolar spinel and 3 presolar corundum grains, among 753 grains from Murray separate CG (mean diameter 0.45 ...
متن کاملOxygen, magnesium and chromium isotopic ratios of presolar spinel grains
Oxygen isotopic measurements of 20 spinel (MgAl2O4) grains from the CM2 meteorite Murray (average diameter 0.45 m), seven spinel grains from ordinary chondrites (OC, 0.3 to 2 m) and three spinel grains from the CI chondrite Orgueil (0.4 to 0.7 m) have revealed large anomalies and thus established their presolar origin. Their O isotopic ratios fall into all four previously defined groups and ind...
